How Often Should I Wash My Cloth Diapers?

Cloth diapering doesn’t have to be complicated — in fact, it can be as simple as doing two extra loads of laundry a week! Getting comfortable with a wash routine that works for you is the secret to keeping things hassle-free and fitting cloth diapering easily into your daily rhythm.

In this blog post, we’ll be sharing how often you should be washing your cloth diapers, along with some tried-and-true washing instructions to help you ensure they’re 100% clean after every wash. Whether you’re still considering cloth diapering or have just started your journey, we’ve got the tips to make it feel easy and stress-free!

How Frequently Should You Wash Your Cloth Diapers?

“Every 2 - 3 days”

Whether you decide to cloth diaper full-time or just part-time, it’s super important to get into a consistent washing routine. Generally speaking, washing your cloth diapers every 2 - 3 days is the best way to care for your diapers 👍

We sometimes hear of families who hope to “buy enough cloth diapers so you only have to do your washing once a week”, but unfortunately, this approach causes more issues than it’s worth. To start, too many days between washes is a surefire way to invite ammonia to set up shop in your diapers. And trust us, it’s a stubborn guest! You can read more about this issue and how to treat it here: How to Tackle Ammonia Build-Up in Cloth Diapers

Additionally, leaving the diapers for too many days between washes can lead to issues with mold or mildew growth (more guests we’re sure you’d rather not host in your diaper pail!). We talk more about mold/mildew and how to treat them here: Eliminating Mold and Mildew from Cloth Diapers. Laundering every 2 - 3 days will keep your diapers clean, your baby's skin happy, and your routine hassle-free.

How to Wash Your Cloth Diapers

Every 2 - 3 days, load your washing machine ½ - ⅔ full with all of your cloth diapers, wipes, and accessories. Once the machine is properly loaded, you’ll run 2 wash cycles before moving everything to the dryer:

Wash Cycle 1

Run a “normal” cycle with warm water and 1 scoop of Washing Powder sprinkled on top (or measure for a “normal” load if using another detergent*) + your 4 Agitators if you have them! (These are our silicone washer dryer balls that pack a punch in the washing machine and dryer 💪)

Wash Cycle 2

Run a “heavy duty” cycle with hot water and 2 scoops of Washing Powder sprinkled on top (or measure for a “heavy duty” load if using another detergent) + Agitators.

*Avoid any extra hot, sanitize, allergen, or steam cycles – as these are too intense for your diapers

Drying

Cycle: Timed Dry
If you have a gas dryer, we recommend Med-High Heat, for 55-65 minutes.

If you have an electric dryer (which tends to not get as hot as gas), you can use High Heat, for 65-75 minutes.

If you’re considering using a different detergent instead of our Washing Powder, you can make sure your choice is suitable for cleaning cloth diapers here:  What Kind of Dergent Do You Need Wash Cloth Diapers?

How to Store Your Cloth Diapers Between Washes

Between wash days, we recommend using our Pail Pouch for storing soiled diapers. Lots of Esemby families use it on its own simply hanging on a doorknob or hook! But if you prefer using a diaper pail, the Diaper Dekor Plus paired with our Pail Pouch as a liner makes for a perfect duo! (it’s the one that’s pictured with the Pail Pouch on our website)

Whichever storage method you choose, here are a couple of important tips to keep in mind:

  1. Avoid Plastic : Never store dirty diapers in plastic (like ziplocks, grocery bags, or garbage bags). Plastic traps moisture and prevents airflow, creating the ideal conditions for mold to grow.

  2. Don’t Overstuff : Be mindful not to pack too many diapers into your bag or pail. Overstuffing can lead to mold growth, even with the best storage solution. Keep things breathable by giving your diapers enough space.

Pro Tip : Want to make sure things stay fresh until laundry day? Try our Pail Deodorant!
