Cloth diapering multiples isn’t just doable; it’s also packed with some pretty amazing perks. Ready to dive in? Let’s break it all down together, step by step.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Esembly was founded by 3 moms who spent 12 years running a cloth diaper service in NYC where they laundered over 15,000 diapers every single week! They used that massive amount of real-world experience to engineer the Esembly system and formulate their Washing Powder, the only detergent ever awarded a patent specifically for cleaning cloth diapers.

Why Cloth Diapering Makes Sense for Multiples

When you’ve got two (or more!) babies in diapers, the cost and waste of disposables can add up fast. Cloth diapering can be a game-changer for families with multiples, and here’s why:

Cost Savings

Let's face it: diapering one baby is expensive, and diapering two (or more) can feel like a financial black hole. 😵‍💫 According to the National Diaper Bank Network, the price of disposable diapers has increased 48% since the pandemic — costing families upwards of $1,000 per child, per year. For twin families, that math hits twice as hard.

Cloth diapers are the diapering option that inflation can't touch. They're a one-time investment that can save twin families $4,000+ from birth to potty training, compared to two children in disposables. And with proper care, Esembly diapers can even be reused for future siblings — making them an even smarter choice for growing families.

Environmental Impact

Disposable diapers create a staggering amount of waste – and when you’re diapering multiples, that waste doubles (or triples!). Cloth diapers are a sustainable choice that helps reduce your family’s environmental footprint. Plus, Esembly’s diapers are made with eco-friendly materials like organic cotton and recycled polyester, so you can feel good about your choice.

And here’s the cherry on top: by choosing cloth, you’re not just helping the planet – you’re setting an example for your little ones. Imagine teaching your twins or multiples about sustainability from the very beginning! It’s a small change that makes a big difference for their future.

Adjustable Fit for Each Baby

When you’ve got multiple kids in diapers, the last thing you need is a diaper that doesn’t fit right. Leaks? Blowouts? No thank you! That’s why Esembly’s cloth diapers are designed to give each of your little ones a snug, secure fit–no matter their shape or size.

Our Inners (aka fitted diapers) and Outers (aka diaper covers) come in just two sizes to take your babies from birth all the way to potty training. (more on this below!) No more guessing which size of disposables to stock up on or worrying about outgrowing a box before you’ve even finished it. With Esembly, you won’t need to juggle all kinds of sizes of diapers or make late-night runs to the store because you’ve run out of the “right” size.

When properly sized and changed, our Esembly cloth diapers are designed to be leak-proof and blowout-proof. (Yes, even for your most wiggly, giggly, or adventurous baby!) Plus, the adjustable fit means you can customize the diaper to each baby’s unique build, so you’re not stuck with a one-size-fits-all solution that doesn’t actually fit all.

What You’ll Need to Get Started Cloth Diapering Twins or Multiples

Cloth diapering multiples doesn’t have to be complicated. As mentioned, one of co-founders has twins, and we’ve also helped hundreds of families with twins or multiples get set up with their own cloth diaper stashes. For ease of use, we’ve detailed everything you’ll need to cloth diaper twins below.

But first things first, let’s cover some necessary “vocabulary” for cloth diapering with Esembly. This will help you understand what you need and why it’s important!

INNER

This is our fitted diaper (made of 100% organic cotton!), which provides all the absorbency you’ll need – and is oh-so-soft on delicate baby skin.

OUTER

This is the Esembly diaper cover. It’s the waterproof part of our diaper. It goes over the Inner to keep things leak-free and blowout-proof. 🙌

SIZE 1

Esembly diapers come in 2 sizes (we chose this to ensure a nice trim fit for your baby, while ensuring the entire diaper stays leak and blowout-proof from birth to potty training) Our Size 1 diapers (both Inners and Outers) are designed to fit your babe from about 7 lbs - 17 lbs.

SIZE 2

When your babe is approaching the end of the weight range for Size 1s, it’s time to size up! Our Size 2s will fit your baby from about 18 lbs—potty training (about 35 lbs).

How Do You Wash Cloth Diapers When You Have Twins?

Before we started Esembly, we ran a cloth diaper laundry service in New York City — washing 15,000 diapers a week. So when we say we know how to get diapers clean, we mean it. And here's what that experience taught us: washing diapers for multiples is just as straightforward as washing for one baby. You'll just need to keep a few key things in mind.

Follow our simple 2-cycle routine. It's designed to get your diapers clean and fresh without any fuss. We've detailed the basics below, but be sure to check out this blog post for The Complete Guide to Washing Your Cloth Diapers at Home: The Esembly Way.

Cycle 1

Run a "normal" cycle with warm water and 1 scoop of Washing Powder sprinkled on top (or measure for a "normal" load if using another detergent).

Cycle 2

Run a "heavy duty" cycle with hot water and 2 scoops of Washing Powder sprinkled on top (or measure for a "heavy duty" load if using another detergent).

Drying

Timed Dry — Med-High Heat for 55–65 minutes (gas dryer) or High Heat for 65–75 minutes (electric dryer).

And remember...

Use a powerful detergent. Our Esembly Washing Powder is specially formulated to handle the job — in fact, it's the only detergent with a patented formula to power-clean dirty diapers, even with multiple babies in diapers.

Don't overstuff the machine. With multiple little ones, you'll likely have lots of dirty diapers on wash day — and that's okay! Aim to fill your machine about halfway to two-thirds full to ensure proper agitation. Washing every 2 days (instead of every 2–3 days) can help keep your load sizes just right.

Know what to do with the poop. When your babies are on a milk-only diet, you can toss both pee and poop diapers straight into your pail pouch until wash day — breastfed and formula-fed infant stool is water-soluble, so no pre-rinsing is needed at this stage. Once solids are introduced, just remove the bulk of solid matter before laundering (our Tossers or Stay-Dry Liners make this step a breeze!) — the washing process stays exactly the same. No rinsing or spraying required!

Cloth Diapering Twins or Multiples: Easy, Affordable, and Eco-Friendly

Cloth diapering twins or multiples might seem like a big leap, but with Esembly, it's simpler than you think. Our system is designed to fit seamlessly into your busy life, saving you money, reducing waste, and keeping your babies comfy and cozy. Plus, every time you choose an Esembly diaper, you're keeping disposables out of the landfill and making a positive impact on the planet!

Think of it this way: you're not just diapering your babies — you're making a choice that's better for their future and the world they'll grow up in. And with our easy-to-follow routines and supportive community, you'll never feel like you're doing it alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is cloth diapering twins more expensive upfront? Yes — there's an initial investment, but it pays for itself quickly. A full twin stash from Esembly costs a fraction of what two children in disposables will run you over their diapering years. And if you have more kids down the road, you can reuse the same diapers — making the value even better.

Can I use the same diapers for both twins? Absolutely! You'll wash and rotate your stash rather than assigning specific diapers to each baby. One shared stash, two happy babies.

How often should I wash cloth diapers when diapering twins? Every 2 days is the sweet spot — it keeps your stash rotating, your load sizes manageable, and your diapers fresh. With the right stash size, you'll never feel like you're scrambling to keep up.

Is cloth diapering twins really doable for busy parents? We'd say so — and we're not just saying that! One of our co-founders is a twin mom herself, and we've helped hundreds of twin and multiples families get set up with cloth. And we're here to help and cheer you on the whole way!
